If you have shaded spots in the
pond for fish to hide, and to stay cool in the heat
of summer, then you may want to add fish to your pond.
Some fish eat algae, as well as unwanted pests, such
as snails and mosquito larvae. Keep in mind, the fish
do produce waste, which does need to be taken into
account, but a good biological filter will convert
the fish waste into beneficial nutrients for the pond.
Pumps and filters circulate and clean
the water in your pond. A waterfall or fountain will
help to provide oxygen to the water, as well as keeping
the water from getting stagnant. Mosquitoes like to
lay their eggs in stagnant water, so if you have sufficient
movement of the water, you won't have a problem with
mosquito larvae. The water can be circulated through
a filter, or a series of filters to help clean the
water. The simplest filter is a simple strainer, which
removes debris from the water. The water can also
be circulated through activated charcoal filters,
to remove the toxins from the water, or biological
filters, which use beneficial bacteria, to convert
fish and plant waste into nutrients.
Keeping your pond clean does take some
work, but the results are worth it. A well kept pond
is much more relaxing, and more enjoyable, even if
it does require a bit more work.
